Tell Us About The Pornstar Martini

The Pornstar Martini is the cocktail of the decade, hands down. It is incredibly popular in the UK and is regularly included in the world’s top cocktail lists. It was invented by the legendary bartender, Douglas Ankrah, at The Townhouse bar in Knightsbridge in 2002. The Pornstar Martini actually started life as the Maverick Martini, named after a bar that Ankrah had frequented in Cape Town after a recent trip. Thankfully the name evolved into the Pornstar Martini, far more catchy and certainly a contributing factor in the cocktails global fame.

When asked about the inspiration behind the Pornstar Martini recipe, the bartender says “It was a complete accident. Sometimes writing a song can take two minutes or a year. I created this in 15 minutes or less. Like how Mick and Keith wrote ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ in 10 minutes.”

What an accident it was. The Pornstar Martini recipe that Douglas Ankrah knocked up in that 15-minute window is the perfect mix of tart passion fruit, sweet vanilla and dry Champagne, a flavour combination that works perfectly together. Looking back over the last ten years, the popularity of the Pornstar Martini does show how mainstream palates do favour cocktails that are not too complex or challenging. That and the mix of theatre (in the serving of two separate drinks) and the eyecatching name shows why it’s such a hit.

Expert Tip

If you plan on making several Pornstar Martinis then we recommend buying pre-batched passionfruit and lime purees. You can buy fruit purees online from brands such as Funkin, Monin or ODK.
