Tell Us About The Pina Colada Cocktail
The Pina Colada cocktail, dividing opinion since 1954. Some love it and some hate it. Given the fact it’s one of Googles most searched for cocktails says it all.
The Pina Colada recipe was invented in San Juan, Puerto Rico by Ramón “Monchito” Marrero at the Caribe Hilton in 1954 and it’s left quite a mark on the world. Ramón’s simple creation was a massive hit at the hotel bar, where he ran proceedings for the next 35 years – apparently personally making every Pina Colada that was ordered.
As is the amusing tradition of the history of classic cocktails the inventor of the cocktail is disputed. Another bartender at the same hotel that Ramón worked at also claims the Pina Colada recipe is his (a chap called Ricardo Garcia) but no one really knows.
Either way, it became such a mainstay in Puerto Rican cocktail bars that it was made the official cocktail of Puerto Rico in 1978.
As ever, it has been the original of countless variations and interpretations and such is the forgiving nature of coconut cream, it lends itself to many tropical flavours.
The cream in a Pina Colada is the scourge of the bartender. Why? When you shake a Pina Colada cocktail be sure to rinse the equipment in warm water before making any other cocktails, otherwise you will have a creamy tinge in the next drink you shake up.
An easy variation of the shaken Pina Colada recipe is a blended one. Simply add an ice scoop (1 cup) of crushed ice to a blender along with the rest of the ingredients. If you want to give it some additional pizazz then add some fresh pineapple chunks. Blend up and serve.
